Gregory Lee Meadows ~ DeSoto April 20, 1947 - November 28, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Gregory Lee Meadows who passed away on November 28, 2023, at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Greg was born April 20, 1947, in Carbondale, Illinois the son of the late Joseph Riley and Norma Kathryn (Taylor) Meadows.

He married Mardi M. Youngblood on August 17, 1968 in DeSoto, Illinois. They have shared over 55 years of marriage.

Greg graduated from DeSoto Grade School in 1961 and went on to graduate from CCHS in 1965. Following graduation, he went on to serve in the United States Army from 1966-1970 and was honorably discharged. After serving in the military, Greg went on to work at Norge in Herrin, Illinois and was awarded the Tapilla Award for perfect attendance. He retired after 40 years. Greg served as a volunteer fireman at Fire Department 21 in DeSoto Illinois for over 35 years and was assistant fire chief for 11 of those years. He was also a Safety Officer for the department. Greg belonged to the Coal Belt Fire Protective Fire Association and was recognized as a lifetime member for over 35 years of membership. Greg was also was a member of the Carbondale Moose Lodge #1108 from 1977 until it closed and a member of the American Legion.

Greg was an avid race car, sprint and stock car fan. He also loved to hunt and fish. He considered himself a very very semi-pro golfer and above average first baseman for the Moose Softball team. Greg loved Carbondale High School football and seldom missed a home game and if he did, he would listen to the game on the radio.

One thing that was important to Greg before he passed was to be baptized. The baptism took place in the presence of family and was performed by Greg’s brother-in-law Roy Keehn on October 30, 2023.

Greg is survived by his wife Mardi M. Meadows, his children Jennifer and husband Todd Mattingly, Andi and husband Tony Rushing; Six grandchildren: Matthew Joseph Roth, William Gregory Roth, Dalton Joles, Grace Rushing, Walker Rushing, Mya Rushing; Zachary Doan, Patrick Joles; sister Vicy Carter; nieces; Jo Anna Lively, Erin Carter Godoyo, Michelle Carter; and very dear friend and brother and sister in law by love not birth, Tom and Karen Betts. There were also many other “adopted” family/grandkids and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Norma Meadows and brother-in-law Randy Carter.

A Celebration of life will be held at a future date and will be announced through social media.
